Saturday 25th February 2023 (1pm) – Surrey Junior Cup Round Four, tie #13
STAINES & LAMMAS (MIDDLESEX) Res/U23 (1) 1 HERSHAM Reserves (1) 1
Staines & L(M) won 2-1 on penalties
Lamar Besidonne’s & Keith Dry's side progressed to the quarter-finals of the Surrey Junior Cup, thanks to another penalty shoot-out victory (their third in 7 weeks), which featured three more saves from goalkeeper Ben Appleton. They went a goal down in only 5 mins, but levelled through George ‘Gilly’ Gilchrist on 22.
With no further goals in the 90 minutes, the tie went straight to penalties, with Hersham getting the shoot-out underway. Appleton saved their first two attempts, but the same fate befell Gilchrist’s and Kaba’s kicks for Staines. Then both teams scored one, Umran Sankoh doing the honours for the hosts. Hersham's fourth was sent into orbit, but Z Halsey's was saved to keep it 1-1.
Hersham’s final penalty was also saved, and it was left to Patrick Mackinney to successfully secure progress from an unusually low-scoring shoot-out! Staines remain 3rd in the league table.
