STAINES & LAMMAS (MIDDLESEX) (2) 2 SHOTTERMILL & HASLEMERE (1) 1
After what was described as a “good old fashioned cup tie” between two rain-sodden teams, Staines emerged as narrow victors over the Surrey County Intermediate League (Western) Premier Division [step 8] visitors.
Playing their first game in over a month, Staines were quickly into their stride, but Betts’ goal from a cracking volley was ruled offside on 7 mins, and Hogg and Leeks also went close. But on 27 mins, from virtually their first attack, Adam Bicknell put the visitors ahead with a skidding shot following a left-sided corner. But Staines levelled on 39 mins as Betts raced down the right and centred for Hieke, and although his shot came back off the woodwork, it was left to Josh Hooks to roll it in. With a minute to go to half time, Staines won a corner, at which May was adjudged to have pushed a striker: the Shottermill man got his name taken, and Josh Hooks calmly converted the penalty.
The rain eased after the break, but try as they might, neither side could add to its score. A hotly contested closing period saw yellow cards for Hooks (time-wasting) and Hayworth (foul 84m). In the 90th minute, Hieke fired over following a swift Staines break, then, 2 mins into stoppage time, Kennedy got down smartly to make a great save that secured Staines’ progress.
Supporter Norman McNicol selected Hieke as the Man of the Match.
Meanwhile, Staines slipped from 2nd to 3rd in the league, although still with games in hand on the teams above them.
