SAT 15 OCT 22 - HORSLEY V S&LMFC - MATCH ABANDONED

The visit to Horsley’s excellent oak-lined set-up at Toms Field was brought to a premature and sad end when a defender from the home team sustained a serious injury in the 58th minute of play.

Referee Terry Kirk deferred a final decision for 10 minutes while the player was made comfortable and an ambulance timing could be estimated, but as he could not be moved there was in the end no other course than to abandon the fixture.

It had been an excellent contest up to that point, with Staines enjoying much the better of the first half with the wind at their backs, but Horsley coming back strongly in the second. Jamie Ross had seen a header rattle the crossbar on 11 minutes, and the home ‘keeper Bawn had made a couple of good saves. Horsley’s best chance fell to James Murray, whose shot went just wide, but Staines were soon back on the attack, with Paul Bartholomew having an effort blocked in the 6 yard box.

A torrential downpour at the start of the second half seemed to spur the hosts on, and they struck the woodwork and forced the Blue Swans into a lengthy spell of defending. The injury to Matty David came as Staines made a rare foray forward, and with the ambulance having to come from Guildford, everyone’s thoughts turned to keeping the stricken player warm and comfortable as he sustained what appeared to be a double fracture of the lower leg.
